Company & Mission

Restoring Economic Sovereignty to Haiti

Haitian Dollar Inc. was founded to transform a century-old cultural pricing convention into resilient, low-fee digital infrastructure for everyday commerce, diaspora remittances, and financial self-determination.

Historical Background

From Colonial Extortion to Everyday Convention

In 1825, twenty-one years after Haiti won its independence through the world’s only successful slave revolt, French warships returned to demand an indemnity of 150 million francs — what The New York Times estimated in its historic investigation cost Haiti between $21 billion and $115 billion in lost economic growth across two centuries of compound debt.

When the Haitian Gourde was tied to the French Franc in 1881 and subsequently pegged 5:1 to the US Dollar in 1912, everyday merchants began quoting prices in "Haitian Dollars" — dividing gourde sums by five to navigate turbulent monetary shifts.

No government ever printed a physical Haitian Dollar note. Yet for over 110 years, it has remained the universal language of Haitian marketplaces.

"All informal trade is carried out in Haitian Dollars. Prices are quoted in Haitian Dollars. Money is counted as Haitian Dollars." — Dr. Erin B. Taylor, Economic Anthropologist

Honson Luma

Honson Luma

Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Honson Luma is the author of the original Haitian Dollar White Paper (October 2020), applicant of the registered USPTO Haitian Dollar trademark (Serial 88319997), and executive sponsor of Haitian Dollar Inc.'s SEC Form D filings.

Dedicated to diaspora economic mobilization and Caribbean fintech innovation, Honson recognized that trying to introduce an unfamiliar foreign currency unit into Haiti was doomed to fail. Instead, by formalizing the 1 HTD = 5 HTG cultural convention that Haitians already speak, Haitian Dollar creates seamless, trust-minimized digital rails for millions of unbanked citizens.
